Making it vegan !!!

In the beginning there was Smart Floss, our super effective, much loved floss. But as there’s really not a one-floss-fits-all-people, and our vegan friends were asking for a floss without beeswax, we had a challenge. How to keep the same amazing, best-selling floss, but make it vegan-friendly. 

And so the Vegan Floss Journey Began

We knew we would keep the same floss material since its efficacy was already established — clinically proven to remove up to 55% more plaque than regular floss.  To make it vegan, we had to remove the beeswax, an important ingredient in the Smart Floss wax, and use an all plant wax formula.  Sounds easy enough but finding the right ingredients with the correct properties to provide both tackiness and expansion, etc., took many lab months.

After getting the right properties, we wanted to give it a unique, refreshing flavor that also has oral care benefits.  Woah, flavor indeed — the resulting burst of lemongrass flavor with curcuma undertones is so refreshing you may simply enjoy chewing on it. 

It was effective–and innovative–but we wanted even more efficacy. So we added activated charcoal.  Yes, this is on the “trendy” list, but for good reason.  It has the amazing ability to adsorb many times its volume because of its porous surface.  Used for centuries as a filter system to remove impurities by grabbing (layman’s term for adsorbing) impurities in water, it also grabs plaque from between your teeth and gumline.  It’s so effective we only use a small amount — so there’s no need to worry about it being too abrasive.  As Goldilocks would say, “It’s just right.”

Taking Vegan to the Eco-conscious Zone

We had the floss, we had the plant-based, flavorful wax blend…and we also checked the box on innovative packaging!

We went to work with some talented Italian designers and developed an award-winning, all-in-one paperboard package and dispenser. This earth-friendly innovation won two prestigious international design awards.  It was really amazing to see DrTung’s on the wall at the award ceremony next to Porsche and other international brands.

The Takeaway

Now you know the story behind our Vegan Activated Charcoal Floss.  But our eco-conscious journey is only gaining momentum and, like a good Netflix series, there’s more to come.
