Toothbrushing – Quick History
Did you know that the first humans started brushing their teeth over 5000 years ago? As long ago as 3,000 BC, ancient Egyptians constructed crude toothbrushes from twigs and leaves to clean their teeth. This same manner was also used by Greeks, Romans, Arabs and Indians—some actually fraying the end of the twig so that it could penetrate between the teeth (perhaps the earliest form of floss!). A 600 year-old version of a toothbrush has been found in China, yet the modern toothbrush is credited to William Addis, who, while imprisoned in an English jail in 1780, decided to drill holes into a sheep’s bone, and pull through bristles of boar hair! In the U.S., although toothbrushes were available at the end of the 19th century, the practice did not become widespread until after WWII, when soldiers continued the tooth brushing that was required during their military service.
Fast forward about 75 years and tooth brushing has become a daily habit for the masses, actually evolving into several other key oral health practices such as flossing, oil-pulling and other methods to keep our gums and teeth healthy. Of course, as technology advances, so does oral health care, with the ever-popular toothbrush becoming even more useful over time.
There are currently several types of toothbrushes in the marketplace and you’ve undoubtedly seen a myriad of options available in the store as well as online. So which type of toothbrush should you choose? DrTung’s recommends the Ionic toothbrush.
What is an Ionic Toothbrush?
An ionic toothbrush is a toothbrush that makes teeth repel plaque! Normally teeth have a negative polarity. Plaque has an opposite or positive polarity, causing it to cling to your teeth. DrTung’s Ionic Toothbrush breaks this ionic bond by temporarily reversing the polarity of tooth surfaces as you brush. The plaque molecules are then repelled by the teeth and drawn to the negatively polarized bristles of the Ionic Toothbrush. When using the Ionic Toothbrush, you first moisten your fingers with water. The moisture in your fingers comes in contact with a thin metal band connected to one pole of a small built-in lithium-ion battery. When you brush and your teeth touch the toothbrush bristles that are moistened with water/saliva/toothpaste, a closed circuit is created by your own body and teeth begin to repel plaque! This silent ‘ionic action’ (there is no motor and thus no EMFs) removes up to 48% more plaque than a manual toothbrush, according to clinical research. Click here for more information.
Manual and electronic toothbrushes inefficiently rely on friction to remove plaque. DrTung’s Ionic Toothbrush, however, makes teeth let go of plaque, like turning off a magnet. If the main reason to brush teeth is to remove plaque, then it must be said that this is the best toothbrush! Henley Grove of the Sundala Health Centre recently reviewed DrTung’s Ionic Toothbrush and talked about the unique plaque attack attributes of this technology.
As plaque is also positively charged, the plaque is repelled away from the teeth. This is especially useful in removing plaque from between the teeth where the brush bristles may not reach properly. This provides a much more thorough and complete clean than using an ordinary toothbrush, and enables the teeth to continue to stay clean for longer after brushing.
His experience, as well as many other DrTung’s Ionic Toothbrush fans, has been very positive. They find that their teeth maintain a slick, clean feel longer than before, and often their dentist or hygienist comments on this.
