Q&A—Smart Floss® in Paperboard Packaging

This summer we proudly introduced the innovative, eco-friendly paperboard packaging for our #1 selling Smart Floss.  We couldn’t be more excited about this major step in our journey to move away from plastic and lighten DrTung’s footprint on planet earth.

We love that so many of you are excited to be on this journey with us.  We’ve received many, many positive comments and kudos since the unveiling in July.  It is heartwarming to see the outpouring of care and honor for our planet.

As is sometimes the case with big changes there are also questions.  Below is a Q&A for some of the questions you’ve asked about the packaging.  We can assure you, it’s not only good for the planet, but it stands up to the test of the consumer.

Q:  Is the new dispenser ‘hygienic'?  

A:  Yes.  Inside the paperboard dispenser, the spool of floss is enclosed in a cellulose pouch (made from renewable wood) that maintains cleanliness and freshness.  There’s a tiny hole where the floss threads out and up to the cutter section.  

Q:  Is the paperboard dispenser resistant to moisture in the bathroom?  

A:  Yes.  The paperboard will most certainly stand up to the moist environment of a bathroom setting.  Just like the round dispenser, you can gently wipe down the surface if you happen to drop it on the floor.  One of our team went so far as to unofficially test the full dispenser by submerging it under water for 7 hrs. This is obviously an extreme test — harsher than any normal bathroom environment — but the paperboard held up beautifully.  The color was a little faded, however packaging and floss were still intact and functional after it dried.

Q:  Is the paperboard dispenser sturdy?

A:  Yes. The award-winning, innovative pillow-box design of the packaging has been used on our Activated Charcoal VEGAN Floss for more than three years — having been tested by thousands of users, we are happy to report the design and materials hold up very well.  The special design gives much more ‘stability’ over the common square-shaped cardboard box used in other packaging.  So, while not as long-lasting as plastic, that’s also the point.  Plastic lasts ‘forever’ whereas the paperboard is recyclable and biodegradable.  After a month, when the spool is finished, you can toss it in the recycle or compost bin knowing it will soon be made into something new or completely biodegraded.  

Q:  Is the packaging also the dispenser?  

A:  Yes.  The innovative design combines the dispenser and the packaging into one — there’s no extraneous material required.  Simply remove the outer hang-tag strip, flip open the top flap and start dispensing.  The top flap can then be folded back over to cover the floss until next time you use it.  

Q:  Is the floss still the same?

A:  Yes. Just the packaging changed.  It’s still the same great, #1 selling floss — clinically proven to remove up to 55% more plaque and free of PTFE and PFAS (forever chemicals).  

Q:  Where can I find Smart Floss in the new packaging? 

A:  It’s available online from our website and many health food stores and supermarkets (click here to see a list).  You can also use our store locator to find retailers near you that carry DrTung’s products.  We began distribution of the new packaging in July 2022 so you should find it trickling into your local stores if it’s not there already.
